This
100,000 sq. ft. 7-story, 65 unit apartment building is currently under
construction in State College, PA, home of Penn State University. It will
have 1 ½ levels of underground parking and commercial fit-out space
at the street level.
Because the building is located in an urban setting, completely surrounded by impervious surfaces, storm water management became an immediate, major design issue. The plumbing designers needed to consider how to protect the environment in the event of a hydrocarbon spillage, particularly at the lowest level of the parking structure, lying below the city’s storm water system, which is located directly beneath the street. All roof areas and parking surfaces were allowed to discharge directly into the city’s storm water removal system with no detention time required. However the parking surfaces need to be connected to special systems that protect the environment from any oil, gasoline or antifreeze spillages. The lower parking structure levels were connected to a special rainwater system that drains to a special filtration catch basin at the lowest level of the structure and pumps discharge up to the city storm water collection system. |
