Knoll
Furniture Philadelphia Showroom |
|
| This international open-office furniture manufacturer maintains corporate showrooms in major metropolitan areas to show prospective clients their product lines in a real office setting. This particular space was in the 100 year old historically significant "Design Building" in downtown Philadelphia. In keeping with Knoll's company philosophy and product line, which features environmentally friendly materials with high recycled content, this project achieved LEED for Commercial Interiors at the Silver Level. In fact, it was one of the very first LEED CI projects certified in the nation. |
The building owner did not want to replace the existing light commercial HVAC unit even though it was well past its useful life, so the equipment was rebuilt, serviced, and new controls were added in order to meet LEED requirements for energy efficiency. Perimeter walls on the north and west side of the space were lined with individually thermostatically controlled sections of baseboard radiation to offset heat losses associated with the uninsulated, heavy mass exterior walls. Free cooling systems and barometric relief dampers were added to make the systems more energy efficient in the Spring and Fall. |
